WHAT YHWH SAYS ABOUT GOD

In the Bible, a name was often given to someone as a way of revealing character. A study of the names of God is an interesting exercise, because it can give us valuable insight into the Person of God. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew name for God is YHWH, beginning in Gen. 2 and used some 6519 times.

Often spoken as Yahweh, or (later translated to Jehovah), the name was written without vowels because most Jewish people considered God’s name too holy to write or even try to pronounce. Coupled with a strong belief in the commandment not to take the Lord’s name in vain, most members of the Jewish community substitute the word Adonai, meaning Lord as the Hebrew term for God.

THE WORD YHWH MEANS GOD IS HOLY

For the Christian, the word YHWH speaks to the holiness of God.

“You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,” (Lev. 22:32)

“No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.” (I Sam. 2:2).

The holiness of God refers to the absolute moral purity of His nature. As the concept of God develops in the Bible, it is not long before the reader discovers that there is a complete and total divide between the moral goodness of God and the sinful heart of man.

When Moses asks to see God’s face, God indicates that His Presence is too glorious for human eyes to glimpse. (Ex 33:20). When Isaiah enters the Holy of holies and encounters God high and lifted up, he hears the seraphim cry “Holy, Holy, Holy.” (Is. 6”3). Basically, the heavenly hosts emphasize the holiness of God not once, but three times.

Perhaps this is a designation about how holy God truly is, (The Lord is so holy that the description must be repeated for emphasis). Perhaps this is a reference to the Trinity (God the Father is holy. God the Son is holy. God the Holy Spirit is holy). Whatever the intention, Isaiah realizes that he has no business being in the presence of such purity.

The prophet suddenly realizes that he is a dead man, for he is a man of unclean lips, and he lives among a people who are just like him. Having just encountered the holiness of Yahweh, he deserves the punishment of death.

Because God is Holy, there is nothing that man can do to justify himself in the eyes of God. No work of righteousness will suffice or even come close bridging the gap between God and man. Hence the reason that God sent his one and only Son, the spotless Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. It is the faultless sacrifice of Christ that makes a way for us to be restored to the Father.

THE WORD YHWH MEANS GOD IS PRESENT

When Moses asks God about his name, God replies with a great I AM statement.

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”  And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”  (Ex.3:14).

This is the word Yahweh. (Again, notice that it is used three times). Roughly translated from the Hebrew, this passage means “I will be who I have always been.”

Jesus uses the same word, when he tells the authorities, “before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). This is a clear reference to the eternal presence of Jesus as a member of the Trinity.

For the Christian, these words should provide great comfort. Why? Because YHWH has imparted both holiness and presence to us. When you and I believed on the name of Christ, we became blameless in the eyes of Almighty God. Christ’s righteousness became ours. We are Holy as God is Holy. God imparts the moral purity of Christ to us and we are justified as if we had never sinned.

Furthermore, this is a quality that we cannot lose. We are sealed into that righteousness by a living God who works in us and through us to will and do His good pleasure.

Every time you see the letters YHWH know that God is making a statement about Himself, but He is also making a statement about you. And what He has done for you. He is a holy God who never leaves us or forsakes us, even to the ends of the earth. Even for all eternity.
